Voter ID Not Currently in Effect

There are two important recent changes to Wisconsin Voting law that are still in effect

  1. 28 Day Residency Rule
  2. Proof of Residence

Currently, there are two separate court orders blocking the photo identification requirements of the voter ID law.  The court orders are currently undergoing judicial review.  This means it is unlikely, but still possible, that students and other voters will have to present photo identification at the November 6, 2012 elections.

On September 27, 2012, the Wisconsin Supreme Court declined to hear the appeals to overturn the injunctions and require voter ID.  Wisconsin Attorney General Van Hollen acknowledged that this decision likely meant that voters would not have to present photo identification to vote in the November 6, 2012, elections.  However, it is unclear whether Attorney General Van Hollen will ask the Wisconsin Supreme Court a third time to lift both injunctions against the law before the Novermber 6, 2012, elections.  If he does so, it is also unclear whether the Court will take the case, and if it does, whether the Court will take action before the November 2012 election.

Therefore, UW institutions will continue to provide voter ID compliant student ID cards and enrollment verifications to students who request them.   Students who wish to be prepared if photo identification is reinstated before the November 2012 elections may wish to review the summary of proof of identification. As further information becomes available, updates will be provided on this website.
